Is it Actual Friendship?

Everyday millions of kids around the world access the internet. To check Myspace, Gaia, facebook, or even their e-mails. And if not, theres always that majority who play online games whether its on their computer or their Xbox360. I guarantee that at least 95% of these kids will at one point talk to someone online that they don't know. And most likely they will become "friends." Now the real question is "Can this be considered a real friendship?"

Many of the people that i asked said no. Online friendships can't be real because there is no actual way of knowing who that person is and if you can trust them. There's always the question of whether or not that person is who he or she says they are. Everyone agrees that it is much easier to lie to people when you are not face to face with them. When asked how long they would wait to physically meet an online friend most of them said they never would or they would wait more then a year. The idea of online prowlers is so forceful that most people won't even risk it. In fact most people seemed to think that the majority of the people online where looking for more then just someone to talk to. But is all of this true?

In my eyes no its not true, online friendships can be real and it doesn't have to be about meeting up with them or anything. I have a few online friends myself. They aren't as close or as fun as my physical friends but they are fun to talk to while we're in the middle of a match in Halo or Call of Duty. It may not be the same kind of friendship that i have with my best friend, but it is a type of friendship. The kind where you can just laugh and talk and not worry about that person judging you because in the end you are halfway across the world. In a funny way it takes a good amount of trust to know that the person will have your back as you run out into the midst of war. Even if its just a video game.

So in the end, its a believe what you want type of thing. Whether or not the people you meet online are your friends or not is a matter of pure opinion. I would love to hear how everybody else feel on this topic. If you would like to become my "online friend" look up my gamertagg on Xbox live. Its "Lycan Soul".

I love your topic. It's kinda into relation with my topic. I also have online friends and yes it's a believe what you wanna believe type of thing. It's the trust of the person that is hard. But I believe that you can have friends through the internet.

I think that you did a good job on this topic, Dariana. I don't really trust people on the internet, so that's why I am very mysterious on the internet. ;P But when I do actually trust someone on the internet, they are usually good friends.

Great topic. It's an important subject affecting the world today. I'm not much of a gamer, but as far as myspace and other online websites, it comes down to your definition of "friend". I honestly don't meet new people on myspace, and strictly have it for friends I've known for a while. It really isn't safe to meet with someone you've met via internet. Good job!

Great topic. I agree i believe that its a form of friendship. To me i think you can be more of yourself with an online friend then physical ones because your not trying to impress them like we believe we have tto. You can just be yourself.

I like how you chose to talk about this topic. Every year, you hear about kids meeting their online friends for the first time but something bad happens to them. I'm pretty good with not talking to strangers online. If someone adds me on MySpace and I don't know who the heck they are, I deny their friend request. However, I do have a few online friends. But I made sure that someone I know knows this person. Good job on knocking some senses into people. =]
